Every year, millions of earthquakes occur around the world. About fifty of those earthquakes are being detected and monitored a day by the National Earthquake Information Center. Due to remote areas not being monitored and small magnitudes, many of these earthquakes go undetected every day (USGS, n.d.). Scientists from around the world have attempted to predict earthquakes in order to limit the loss of life associated with these natural disasters. The process of predicting earthquakes has created huge frustrations among seismologists. Their efforts to understand the various elements involved in the prediction of and the catastrophic event of an earthquake leave us with a question: What triggers an earthquake?
